This Is Us: On the Path to Recovery

Episode 1: This Is Us: On the Path to Recovery

Begin with the end. End with the beginning.

By Jimmy Skovgard

What does recovery look like?
It looks like conversations that start with questions, not accusations. It looks like communities choosing curiosity over condemnation. It looks like each of us pausing to ask, “How did we get here—and how do we move forward together?”

The Destination

1. Vision of Renewal
By the end of this series, we will:

  • Recognize the tactics that fracture our trust.

  • Equip ourselves with three core practices—fact‑checking, stepping outside comfort, genuine listening—to counter those tactics.

  • Build small bridges of understanding in our own circles, so those bridges can span towns, states, and ultimately our nation.

2. The Stakes
Our collective mind is the soil in which our democracy grows. When that soil is poisoned by fear and echo chambers, our shared future wilts. We must reclaim it before division becomes irreversible.

3. The Three Pillars of Recovery

Most Important! Enter the conversation—silence may shield us, but it never heals.

  • Truth Habits
Slow down and ask, “Where does this claim come from?” before we share. Build a habit of pausing for proof.

  • Empathy Steps
Step into one conversation you expect to disagree with. Seek first to understand—listen openly, even if choosing silence at times, because true healing begins when we show up.

  • Bridge Actions
Swap facts and stories. Offer a “what‑if” question or a shared source to open a new path forward instead of shutting the door.

The Journey’s Starting Point

4. Why “Begin with the End in Mind?”
We start here to anchor ourselves in our true destination: unity in action. Without this vision, we risk slipping back into cycles of outrage and reaction—or worse: outrage, fear, silence, and inaction.

Our end goal is simple yet transformative: real people engaging in real conversations, choosing understanding over escalation. By centering on that vision, we learn to:

  • Spot the heat in emotionally charged speech before it takes hold.

  • Pause and center our survival‑wired impulses so we can think, not just react.

  • Show up in every conversation—because silence may shield us, but never heals.

Today’s ask: Find your center and focus on an image of unity. Ask yourself, What does unity mean to us? Pause, reflect, and let that answer guide your next words and actions.

5. Our First Steps Together

  • Episode 2 Preview (“From Vision to Action”): We’ll translate these pillars into daily practices and community experiments.

  • Your Homework: Before Episode 2 drops, choose one “Truth Habit” to try this week. Notice how it shifts your conversations.

6. Closing the Loop
We opened by imagining a healed public discourse. Now, circle back—and ask yourself:

  • What does a respectful conversation feel like?

  • How does it differ from the noise you usually hear?

That difference is our true starting line. From here, we’ll build the road to recovery—together.

Stay tuned for Episode 2: From Vision to Action, where we’ll turn these pillars into practice.
Without vision, and no path forward we risk slipping back into cycles of outrage and reaction—or worse: outrage, fear, silence, and inaction.
